In Leviticus 21 + 22, we dive back into the priesthood, specifically the priesthood qualifications. These qualifications allowed the priests to be holy–the ultimate requirement to serve in God’s tabernacle. All the requirements followed a central theme: reverence for God’s holy things and holy times.
HAYLEY’S BIBLE BENDER:
My takeaway from today’s episode was the application for us today. I have wondered before, as Susan mentioned, why God focuses so much on sacrifices. I love realizing that this focus hasn’t changed today even while we don’t sacrifice in tabernacle or temples anymore. Why? Jesus is our ultimate sacrifice today.
Susan said it like this: “The role of the unblemished animal and the unblemished priest in the Old Testament are fused together and fulfilled by Jesus in the New Testament.
-
- As the sacrificial lamb, Jesus’s blood is the perfect atonement for sin
- As High Priest, Jesus is the perfect unblemished replacement for Aaron with greater access to God as our mediator
- No more sacrificing, no more High Priests from the tribe of Levi.
In Hebrews 7:23, Paul explains the new covenant plan like this:
23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. 26 Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27 Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.
